Gaia in Chicago, USA
Around
300 clothes banks across Chicago, and two shops ('thrift stores'). Gaia is
registered in Illinois as a
not-for-profit and claims to support vague environmental good causes.
But Gaia is clearly part of Tvind, an organisation that is cynically clear-felling the Brazilian rainforest for commercial gain. There are complaints in progress to the Chicago Community Loan Fund and other organisations.
Why?
One has to read and understand large sections of this web site to appreciate how Gaia fits in to Tvind's method of collecting old clothes supposedly for charity, while actually selling them to its own companies that pocket the proceeds into Teachers Group accounts offshore.
However Gaia in the US is clearly linked to Gaia/Green World Recycling in the UK - a commercial company, not a charity. whose environmental charities when investigated in 2000 proved to be non-existent.
Both companies carry the same extravagant claims for environmental projects on drop-in boxes. Can any of the claims made there be established? We believe not.
Instead a link is easily established with a mysterious body called the Gaia-Movement Trust in Switzerland - a financial association whose impressive headquarters on investigation turned out to be an accommodation address near Geneva airport. There was no evidence of charitable work of any kind and letters were being forwarded to a TG address in Amsterdam.
The owner of the address (and the only non-TG member of this trust) is a British-born lawyer named Michael Rogers, a controversial figure who is alleged to have acted for companies linked to al-Quaida......
Gaia Chicago can also be clearly linked to Humana UK, a charity shut down by the British Charity Commission for fraudulent dealings in 1998. One of the managers of Gaia in Chicago is a Tvind fundamentalist, Helle Lund, who used to be the company secretary and director of Humana UK. Another manager is TG member Eva Nielsen.
We believe clothes collected by Gaia and the other Tvind US operation Planet Aid are funnelled through Tvind commercial company Garson & Shaw, offering an opportunity for money laundering.
There is no doubt that all the Gaia operations we have found are Teachers Group enterprises. Gaia, in fact, is one of several Teachers Group clothing operations active in the US - others being Planet Aid, U'SAgain and Garson & Shaw.
