"I fear for my Indian TG friends who are still young and who still have some ideals left......" Ellen, ex-volunteer
Humana opened
in India in 1997, the year that Humana in Europe first came under
massive pressure - closed down in England,
labelled a cult in France, and pursued by the Danish
government. Humana India runs a number of
projects, but there are the usual reports that these are poorly
organised, cult-like and most likely a means of making money under cover
of development. There is a college, DRH Sikkim.
Reports please.
Tvind assets: Humana India (1997), projects, Rajasthan, Bihar, HOPE, clothes collection and sales, fund raising, new college in Sikkim
Latest news:
Tata Steel company sponsorship of Humana India ends suddenly.
Sept 2003: Tata Steel company went into partnership in 2001 with Humana India to run a community scheme, 'Project Uday' (See the Tata Steel web site) According to a Tvind Alert correspondent, the partnership lasted less than a year.
The correspondent adds: "Humana India is just being used to transfer money from us and Europe in the name of development. There are some name sake projects running but they are almost in their dying phase except for one. Yes but each year transactions of thousands of dollars are shown in running these projects.
"I would like you all to investigate on the India projects and stop Humana from using India's poverty for their own selfish means."

Ellen, a 54 year old teacher from Canada, volunteered to work with HPPI (Humana People-to-People India) in 2000, attracted by the idea of six months training and working with the poor. She quickly became disillusioned, first with the non-education at IICD Michigan, and then with the amateurism, disregard for volunteers, sniping, intrigue and bullying among project leaders in Rajasthan.
This is an excoriating expose of Tvind in India. Read her story here.
"Line thought that India is just like Africa. She had never been to India. In fact, no one on the staff had ever been to India. They had all been to either Africa or Central America. They thought that all third world, developing countries are the same. There are so many people from India living in the U.S., youd think they could bring in some really interesting people to give seminars, workshops, and language instruction. No, they dont believe in doing anything for the students.......it is such a relief to not be attached to Humana anymore! Not to have to say, Im doing some work for Humana People to People..... as a service to the public, help to expose the corruption and pretense of IICD and Humana."
