Planet Aid Toronto  -   "collected $1.7m but gave nothing to charity"

Toronto Star

Tvind Alert contact:   Ellen Shifrin  ellenshifrin64@yahoo.com

Tvind assets:  shops, clothes collections, coin cans, clothes sorting centre, volunteer recruitment

Canada is one of Tvind's new happy hunting grounds.     Planet Aid, Toronto, is expanding fast, with a shop, scores of clothes collection boxes, cash collection cans and tie-ins with local companies such as a chain of beer stores.     It is a fruitful territory for recruiting volunteers to work in the shops and train at IICD in the USA.         Tvind recruits through careers officers at Toronto university and its 'charitable' activities are widely publicised in local media and the Internet.

Tvind Alert has received several messages from concerned Toronto and Ontario citizens

Statement by Professor Alan Somerset       A statement by Professor Alan Somerset, University of Western Ontario, drafted for wide circulation within the academic community in Canada, the USA and Britain and also sent to the Canadian Association of University Teachers

Volunteers stories

Nick's story      Nick, who lives in Toronto,  travelled to Angola with Tvind in 1996.  He wished he hadn't  -   it was disorganised and dangerous, and he was refused medication for malaria.  He concluded he had got into the hands of a cult-like organisation which put the welfare of its own top members above that of the volunteers.

Ellen's story      Ellen was a Canadian volunteer in India for Humana in 2000-2001 - her story is shocking.

"I found out about the "One World Volunteers" programme through the careers centre at the university of Toronto.    It sounded brilliant, until coming across this site.   You should go to the press- at the very least, inform gullible universities and their students about the true nature of the programme."        Nick Woolnough             with_yourself@goplay.com

I was a bit suspicious when a store called 'Planet Aid' moved into a Yonge Street storefront in downtown Toronto.   It seemed odd to have a store asking people to give their second hand clothes to in order to sell them at rather expensive prices.   We have an organization called Goodwill that accepts donations of clothing and so on and then employs people to run the store.   The money in turn gets chanelled back into local community development programs.   Goodwill is an agency of the United Way, and the United Way/Goodwill programs are clearly advertised.   Very much like a Sally Ann store.   Well, the couple of times I've been into Planet Aid (haven't bought anything, thank goodness), none of the employees or paraphernlia around the store suggested that these people were selling clothes etc. to send the money to help developing countries!!   I had no idea that was the supposed mandate of Planet Aid until a friend referred me to the Tvind Alert website.   So in my opinion, Planet Aid -- at least the one on Yonge Street in Toronto -- is a sham.   People should not donate clothing to the store, since it is ambiguous where the profits from the clothing actually goes.   Give instead to Goodwill or local charities that will use the profits or redistribute clothing to those who need it!!!   -   L.  in Toronto, Ontario   P.S. On your website you refer to Ontario as a region. It's actually a province.
