Zahara Hecksher's story

Zahara Heckscher was a student at IICD and volunteer in Zambia in 1987-88.    Later she became a graduate student studying  international development in Washington DC, facilitating workshops on "The Peace Corps and alternatives" to help people gain their first experiences overseas.   She is highly critical of DAPP and the IICD.  She has  now written a book about volunteering abroad, including some of these criticisms.  Contact:  Peacepeace@CompuServe.com

Jostein's story:

"It took me two years to be able to write this.  I haven't been able to deal with all the emotions since I drove off the hill at IICD, Williamstown in the summer of 1998.   I just did not want to talk about it or think about it..... It is kind of embarrassing to admit I spent 5 years in a cult...."       Read the story

Ellen's Story

Ellen, a 54 year old teacher from Canada, volunteered to work with HPPI (Humana People-to-People India) in 2000, attracted by the idea of six months training and working with the poor.   She quickly became disillusioned, first with the non-education at IICD Michigan, and then with the amateurism, disregard for volunteers, sniping, intrigue and bullying among project leaders in Rajasthan.    Read the story

Matt's story

Matt was one of the early volunteers with IICD in the United States in 1989/90 and soon discovered it was a much weirder than he had bargained for..... "an authoritarian and 'its-best-not-to-question' mentality was evident.  I now characterize IICD as a bunch of Stalinists who were very interested in communal living and decision making as long as we all agreed to what Ester and Mikael had already decided."  Like most of his team, he left.   Read the story

Jane's experience at IICD

I joined IICD between my sophomore and junior years at college and 1992.  I was on the "Angola 5" team but as things got increasingly unstable after the elections there, I pushed for us to go to a different DAPP project. IICD gave the impression that switching projects as a group was a possibility, though it never happened.     We all banded together in response to the mistreatment, fund-raising nightmares, rumors and newspaper articles getting passed around.    Read the story
